L IS FOR LION : A-Z Challenge

Welcome to Day 12 of the A-Z Blogging Challenge. My theme is:

'Wildlife Encounters'

Our self-drive exploration in the Etosha National Park in Namibia was drawing to a close. (See blog post E is for Elephant.)

Oryx at a waterhole, Etosha
The park literature stresses the importance of remaining inside your vehicle at all times. However, after several hours driving in this vast park, it’s not always possible to - ahem - plan one’s bodily functions. Bluntly, we were both in need of a loo.

I checked my park map to locate the nearest toilet facilities and directed my husband. When we arrived at the designated spot, there were no toilets. My husband simply opened his door and did what he had to do. This made me cross. It’s so unfairly easy for men! My husband thought it was a bit rich of me to get cross with him for being – well – a man!
Next ensued a lively discussion.

‘Just get out of the car and pee by the open door.’
‘But I'd have to drop my trousers and crouch down.’
‘And your point is?’
‘What if a lion comes along?’
‘Don’t be melodramatic. Look around you. There aren’t any lions.’

By now I was getting rather desperate and whilst still annoyed at his cavalier attitude towards my safety, I sulkily did as he suggested.
‘See? Was that really such a problem?’ he said smugly as I scrambled back into my seat.

Not half a mile further on we were stopped in our tracks by a pair of adult mating lions.

See you tomorrow – I’m heading north east. Can you guess where and what the next animal will be?

  1. Good thing the lions had something other than a lunch of juicy tourist on their minds.

  2. They were only interested in one thing, Patsy! (And we were safe in the car when we saw them.)

  3. I reckon the lions would have had a good chuckle if they spotted you crouching! Mister would likely have quipped...
"She... I told you that human just peed herself at the thought of seeing one of us!
Then... on the other hand, his missus may have had something else to say...
"Hurry... I haven't got all day to lay around here... I need to go scare humans!"
    Sorry!
How about meerkat in the Serengeti??

  4. Hah! Very funny!
I love meerkats (don't we all?) - you'll have to check tomorrow to see if I'm still in Africa. :)

  5. Wow, how wonderful! And what a fabulous thing to witness. I decided on the other end of the food chain today... just because I had an idea for a fun poem...

  6. Thanks, Liz. I loved your post today - your fun poem was wonderful.

  7. Funny story Susan! The most convenient (for me) is late summer because of the corn fields ;) Lions are amazing and beautiful animals (they're not called kings for no reason).

    1. Thanks, Zeljka. I have a thing about all cats - the wild ones in particular. Our sighting of this pair was fantastic.

    2. I bet it was completely opposite feeling than in the Zoo... :)

    3. Definitely - zoos are deeply depressing places - I stopped visiting them years ago as I can't stand the practise of keeping wild animals in captivity for our entertainment.

  9. Not only do men have it easy in the being able to pee discreetly anywhere (without exposing their bums to the whole world!) they also have bigger bladders so can hold it longer. Definitely not fair.

    1. Hi, thanks for visiting! Men have it lucky in so many ways! :)

  10. Dang! That was close! (As for men, they don't seem to have a whole lot of sympathy for the way we women have to let it all hang out!)

    1. Fortunately not too close! In all seriousness, the place where I got out of the car was very open and very devoid of animal life. I would never have done it if I hadn't been able to see a long way all around me. :)

  12. Story is humorous :) The lions look a little different compared to Asiatic lions

    1. Yes, Jahnavi. I believe African lions are larger... their manes are definitely larger than Asian lions' manes. I'm sure there are other differences.

  13. Very funny story! You probably could not refrain from turning to your husband and saying, "I told you so!" When I was in middle school, I had a love affair with the Joy Adamson books and read them over and over, especially Born Free. Your post reminded me of those days.

  15. Too close for comfort! If you must go on these adventures, take a porta potty for the car!

    1. I pee'd beside a vehicle in the Masai Mara before this adventure, Liz. The difference being... there were more people around to keep a watch. :)

  16. Always prepare for the worst out in the wilds! And Liz is right: a porta potty would have been a great idea!!

    1. Whilst that is, of course, true - we were in a hire car full of essential extras which didn't include potties. And can you imagine trying to use a potty in a saloon car? Umm... actually, let's not try to imagine that!!

  17. Wonder what happened to those toilets. Maybe the lions hid them, to making hunting for dinner easier. Well, when they weren't otherwise occupied...

    1. D'you know - I never did find out what happened to those toilets. :)

  20. I'm glad they were half a mile down the road instead of right in your vicinity. And you're right. Guys have it so easy in those situations.

  22. Lol. My first thought was how frightening that they were so close! Then I realized what they were up to and had a laugh. :) Still, good think you were safe!

  23. Yes, they were only interested in making 'lurve'... :)

  24. OMG, to be so close to such amazing creatures!

  25. Men are so lucky and have no clue what it means to have to crouch down and make sure it doesn't run down your leg. Thank god the male lion was thinking about a good time....his belly must have been full:)
